DL PROJECT

This mixed-use residential and commercial building sits on the eastern edge of Beirut’s dense urban fabric, with rare open views towards the mountains overlooking the city.

Completed in 2019 and located in Beirut’s Achrafieh neighborhood near governmental, academic and medical institutions, DL Project responds to the unique site, local climate and program constraints. Sharing the same podium, the office building facing the city acts as a backdrop to the residential building with its fair-faced concrete and alternate punched openings. Taking shape by virtually projecting the mountainous geography onto the building in the form of undulating concrete ribbons, the wavy residential façade celebrates the site’s uniqueness while providing shade and privacy for residents.

The ribbons curve outward to form balconies for residential units with views of the mountains and a brise-soleil against various angles of the sun at multiple points of the year, providing shade for up to two floors beneath. The balconies function as extensions of living space along the building’s southern elevation to capitalize on views and comfort, while pockets are filled with living green planters which bring the cooling effect of the green mountains into the city.
