SAINT GEORGE CHURCH

The St. George Church, part of an urban development at the edge of downtown Beirut, was built towards the end of the 19th century and suffered severe damage during the civil war.

As part of an urban development- the Beirut Digital District (BDD), at the edge of the reconstructed downtown Beirut, this renovated monument becomes the iconographic center of an increasingly growing urban quarter and fulfills hopes for a revitalized community. The historic restoration of the 50-foot-tall open space consists of preserving the remaining sandstone walls and the addition of a new roof structure.

The complexity of the project lies in its connection to the neighboring BDD 1227 project, a twin office building built to the north and south of the church. Six basements’ floors were built underneath the church, connecting the buildings underground and preserving the church as a separate entity while increasing parking efficiency for the office community.
